What to look for when booking wakesurfing in Miami

Thinking about trying wakesurfing in Miami? Not all experiences are set up the same, especially if it’s your first time.

Here are a few things worth checking before you book:

01 / Field Guide

Safety + crew

Ask whether your captain holds the appropriate USCG license and whether the company’s insurance covers wakesurfing. Look at their content too, but don’t be afraid to ask questions directly. Properly fitted, USCG-approved non-inflatable life jackets while riding, no drinking while participating in watersports, and no wakesurfing after dark are good signs that safety is taken seriously.

Equipment

One board doesn’t fit everyone. A good setup should include a boat designed for wakesurfing and different board sizes and styles based on the rider’s weight and experience level.

03 / Field Guide

Where + when you ride

Ask where they typically wakesurf. You want an area suitable for towing, away from heavy boat traffic. Early mornings and weekday evenings can also mean calmer water and less traffic. If you’re heading out on Biscayne Bay, ask how the crew chooses a suitable riding area for that day.

Coaching

If you’re a beginner, check out their social media or ask how they teach first-timers. A little patience, good instruction, and an experienced captain can make your first session much easier.

Actual riding time

A lower price doesn’t always mean better value. Ask whether the session is private or shared, how many people will be riding, and whether the advertised duration includes travel to the riding area.

For beginners, we recommend allowing around 30–45 minutes per rider, including coaching, attempts, falls, and resets—not continuous riding. That gives everyone room to learn, try again, and actually enjoy it. Confirm how much time your chosen booking allows for your group.

The goal isn’t just to get on a wakesurf boat. It’s to feel safe, have enough time to learn, and leave wanting to do it again.
